Government blocked more than 28 thousand mobile phones

New Delhi: Major action was taken to dismantle the network of cyber fraudsters and protect citizens from digital threats. More than 28 thousand mobile phones were blocked simultaneously. The Department of Telecommunications (DOT), Home Ministry and State Police have together initiated action to prevent such incidents. An analysis conducted by the Home Ministry and the state police revealed that 28 thousand 200 mobile handsets were being misused for cyber crimes. About 20 lakh numbers were used with these mobile handsets.

DoT issued important order
The Department of Telecommunications took a big step in this regard. The department directed telecom service providers to block 28,200 mobile handsets across India and immediately reverify the mobile connections linked to these handsets. In this, the department also said that the numbers which fail verification should be immediately blocked. The statement said such a step reflects a shared commitment to public safety. This step is to ensure the security of telecommunication infrastructure and safe digital transactions.


Advisory issued by the government
Concerned over the increasing cases of fraud among mobile phone users, the government had issued an advisory to citizens in late March. In this, a warning was given to avoid WhatsApp calls coming from foreign mobile numbers. Besides, threats were also made in the name of Department of Telecommunications (DOT) to disconnect the number.

The Ministry of Communications said that the Department of Telecommunications issued an advisory to the citizens. It said that citizens are receiving such calls in which people calling them in the name of Telecom Department are threatening that all their mobile numbers will be disconnected or their mobile numbers are being misused for some illegal activities. The Department of Telecommunications has also issued an advisory regarding WhatsApp calls from foreign mobile numbers impersonating government officials to dupe people.
After investigation the department blocked the phone numbers
The Ministry of Communications said that through such calls, cyber criminals can commit fraud and financial fraud. They also try to take personal information from you. There is a need to be alert on any such call. The Department of Telecommunications had introduced the 'Chakshu' platform two months ago to deal with complaints related to such frauds. Since the activation of this portal, 52 entities involved in sending suspicious messages have been blacklisted. Communications Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that the government has intensified action regarding protection from cyber fraud at three levels, national, organizational and individual level. These efforts are being made to prevent cyber fraud under the Secure India Project. DoT has also taken several initiatives to spread awareness.
